Making Numbers Meet Nature! - Maths Outdoor Learning

Let’s Take Maths Outside!

Maths can be a tricky subject especially for the little ones, but taking it outside makes it engaging, active and fun! Outdoor maths activities encourage children to love, learn and develop their number skills, counting and problem solving while getting some physical activity.

That’s the magic of outdoor maths! Whether it’s spotting shapes in the sky, counting petals on daisies or measuring puddles with sticks, there is so much to be learned outside.

Here are a few playful ways to try outdoor maths:

• Hide number stones around the garden and turn it into a treasure hunt. Can  you find them in order? Backwards? Under a leaf or behind a plant pot?

• Grab a tape measure and see what you can measure! How long is the bench? How tall is the sunflower? Can you guess before checking?

• Try threading some chunky stones to make a number kebab! Count them as you go or create colourful patterns.

• Pour, tip, and fill with jugs and pourers. How many jugs of water fill the bucket? Which container holds the most? Splashy maths fun for sunny days.

• Go on a nature collection walk and use a sorting tray to sort your treasures that you find. Can you group them by size, colour, or shape? Then count how many are in each group.

Little activities like these help little ones build counting skills, number recognition, measuring, sorting and problem-solving all while getting fresh air and having fun!

To help make your maths adventures even more exciting, we’ve picked some brilliant bits from our Outdoor Learning and Maths ranges so grab your coat, pop on those wellies, and head outside!
