Join us on a winter adventure and help uncover the mystery of the Big Bad Mouse with The Gruffalo’s Child book collection.
To bring the story to life, we’ve selected resources from across our range to show they can be tied into the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 7 Areas of Learning to inspire imaginative play and support development in little ones. Whether you want to take learning outdoors or bring your setting to life with some new activities, the collection includes everything from art & crafts essentials to outdoor learning to roleplay resources and more!
Getting started: a campfire story time
Set the scene by getting cosy on our Log Seats (X170322) for a campfire story time to introduce them to The Gruffalo’s Child together, just like in the deep, dark wood. Our log Seats can be used inside or out, so you can really bring the story to life in your outdoor area if the weather holds up! Be sure to encourage turn-taking and ask the little ones what they think is going to happen next – helping to build confidence, communication and listening skills.
Here are some fun ways to take the story off the page and into playtime whilst hitting more of the EYFS 7 Areas of Learning:
- Snow trail adventure – Create a snowy trail using our Woodland Footprints (245046), for your little explorers to follow and see which animal tracks lead to the Big Bad Mouse! This activity is perfect for a sand pit, tuff tray or snowy winter display in your imaginative display corner.
EYFS: This activity promotes Physical Development, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts & Design through imaginative outdoor and sensory play.
- Create a woodland world – Build your own forest scene with trees, leaves, and animals using products such as our Seasonal Woodland Trees (279587), get the little ones to sort the trees into colourful groups and count which group has “the most,” “the least,” or “just a few,” turning maths into a magical woodland game!
EYFS: This supports Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Communication & Language as children bring the story to life through role play.
- Forest Path Creations – Design snowy paths, caves, or secret hideouts for your woodland adventure using our Bumper Craft Tray (178268) while exploring textures and patterns. Encourage creativity, counting, and sensory exploration to enhance Expressive Arts & Design, Mathematics, and Understanding the World.
EYFS: This supports Expressive Arts & Design, Understanding the World, and Communication & Language as children bring the story to life through role play.
Check out some of our top resources below and see how they tie into different EYFS Areas of Learning whilst letting the little ones learn through play, a perfect way to start your own Gruffalo’s Child adventure!
