National Children's Gardening Week

From Saturday 29 May to Sunday 6 June its National Children’s Gardening Week! Throughout the week we are encouraging you to get your children exploring the potentials of the garden and reaping the benefits that the outdoors has to offer.

Gardening is a fun and inexpensive activity in which children will develop new skills while learning about science and nature.

Below, we have highlighted three of our favourite products that are perfect for your little gardening adventurers:

To get you started, we have created an easy craft idea that you and your little ones can do at home.

How-to guide: fruit and vegetable foam markers

What you will need:

  • Assorted foam sheets
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Glue
  • Marker pen
  • Scissors
  • Coloured paints
  • Paintbrushes

1. Cut the coloured foam sheet into the shape of the vegetable, fruit or flower
you intent to plant.
2. Paint the lollipop sticks to match the colour with the cut-out shapes.
3. Glue the cut-out shapes onto the lollipop sticks to create labels for your garden crops.
4. Pop them in the ground or plant pot next to the seeds you’ve planted and watch them spring to life day by day.

We have also created a handy fruit and vegetable template that you can print out to use as either an outline for cutting out the foam shapes or simply use these and colour them in.

Other ways to use the foam markers: fruit and vegetable puppets

The markers can also be used indoors as an activity to help children build up their vocabulary. Use them to help associate the specific fruit and vegetable images with words.
